Are You Indispensible?
An early and great teacher of success principles, Earl Nightingale, often said that if you want to
attain job security, or even a job to begin with, make yourself indispensible to your employer. We
live in an increasingly competitive society. Today more than ever millions of people are competing
for your job and your market. Not only the millions of people who live in your city or nation, but
many millions more around the world.
The best way to keep that job or that market is to become indispensible. In Avil Beckford's review
of Seth Godin's book you can learn more about how true this is and how important it is becoming.
Learn to be the Linchpin in your business or market and you all but guarantee success.
Also today we bring you Jack Canfield's great article on how to chunk down your tasks to avoid
feeling overwhelmed. There are some excellent tips here that we can all benefit from.
Wishing you success,
Daniel R. Murphy

Book Review - Acres of Diamonds by Russell Conwell
By
Pascasio JR Felisilda
There are many books that seem to waste your time and money. There are many books
that are worth reading over and over again. "Acres of Diamonds" is one of the books
of the later type.
Russell Conwell wrote this book about a century ago. The principles that were
relevant for success back then are just as relevant today. His simple but enduring
book, "Acres of Diamonds", is his legacy that impacted many people since its
release. This book can be read in one sitting. Its brevity is its strength. A book
does not have to be hundreds of pages full of fluff to get its point across. A book
can be less than a hundred pages to be direct and poignant on its point.
"Acres of Diamonds" is a book that should be read by anyone- especially those who
wish to seek success. The book itself is based on talks and speeches by Russell
Conwell. These inspirational talks would eventually be used to generate money to
open Temple University in Philadelphia. He was a Baptist minister with a dream to
open a college in Philadelphia. It would seem unlikely that a minister would be
able to raise enough money to open up a college that would be around for many
years. This is what this book has done.
The book has fascinating and true anecdotes on how some regular people (with
extra-ordinary dreams) to become wealthy. They were able to build their wealth by
not looking for it in distant land or countries. Instead, they looked for their
"acres of diamonds" in their own city or backyard. As with anyone seeking
something, we have a tendency to look beyond our own neighborhood or backyard. But,
as the book illustrates, we can overlook acres of diamonds in our own backyard.
There are acres of diamonds ready for our picking in our own backyard.
This book has lessons that should be applied to everyone whether you seek success
in business, in physical fitness, or anywhere for that matter. It starts with you
and where you are at. It does not start by going to some distant place. It starts
in your own area.
Personally, I have read this book over 20 times. Each time it seems there are new
perspectives brought out. Each time it seems the book has changed. This is one book
that seems to change every time you read it. Instead of the book changing, you
change to the better as you go through this book again and again.
As an author, Pascasio Felisilda recently published the book "Nanay: Lessons from a
Mother". This is a very inspiring book. Its simplicity empowers the message and
story about a legacy that is worth living. The book is available through amazon.com

Review of Linchpin - Are You Indispensable? By Seth Godin
By
Avil Beckford
"Original thinker, provocateur, someone who cares, the person who can bring it together and make a
difference...Someone who owns her own means of production, who leads and connects, and walks into
chaos and create order" is a linchpin says marketing guru, Seth Godin in his book Linchpin: Are You
Indispensable? Linchpins are also connectors, and they value relationships because they understand
that no one succeeds alone.
Questions to Ponder
If your organization decided to replace you with someone with superior skills and far better at
your job than you, what would the job ad say?
Do you have the confidence to make a difference in your organization, and to do work that matters?
If yes, why do believe that?
Can you anticipate and solve your customers' problems, even the ones they do not realize they
have?
What do you fear? What holds you back from being your authentic self?
What tools do you have in your tool kit? Do they make you more productive and efficient? Do they
make you remarkable?
While I was reading Linchpin, I kept on thinking about a statement Earl Nightingale made in his
classic The Strangest Secret: "Rollo May, the distinguished psychiatrist, wrote a wonderful book
called Man's Search for Himself, and in this book he says, "The opposite of courage in our society
is not cowardice... it is conformity." And there you have the reason for so many failures.
Conformity - people acting like everyone else, without knowing why or where they are
going."
People are playing it safe and conforming, so we are living in a me-too culture, where most
subscribe to the herd mentality. In Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?, Seth Godin uses the term
artists, but in the context that an artist is someone who changes people by the gifts they offer
the world. Reading the book will make many uncomfortable, because most people do not want to stand
out and be remarkable. Why? Because it takes hard work and a lot of effort. And many do not step
out of their comfort zone and do what needs to be done, because we have always been told what to
do.
Historically, if people kept their heads down, did what they were told, showed up on time for work,
worked hard, sucked it up and not make waves, they would eventually attain professional success.
Those days are long gone. To be successful today, the new reality requires people to be remarkable,
generous, make judgment calls, create art and connect people and art. This is what the global
markets dictate. People have to take the initiative and do what needs to be
done.
Being remarkable and doing what needs to be done will create resistance because it's foreign. When
this occurs, it's time to move through the dip and do what Susan Jeffers says, to feel the fear and
do it anyway. Contrary to what we were taught, our creations really do not have to be perfect. Most
times 80 percent is good enough. As an artist, the more craft you make, the better you
become.
Seth Godin deals with a very difficult topic, because to be a linchpin requires us to swim
upstream. To get more customers, or increase market share, requires that we up the quality of our
service offering, do what others are not doing. In what ways can you up the ante and deliver your
product or service so that it changes your customers?
Five Great Ideas
Stop asking what's in it for you, and start giving gifts that change.
Productivity and generosity make markets bigger and more efficient.
Seek out achievements where there are no limits.
Feel the fear and do it anyway.
Perfection is overrated, laugh at it. Benjamin Franklin discovered that perfectionism doesn't
exist.
A good place to begin if you want to become a linchpin is to honestly answer the five questions to
ponder, then take action.
Do they make you more efficient? Do they may you
remarkable?
Simple Application
I recommend Linchpin - Are You Indispensable? by Seth Godin because it will make you think. Are you
a linchpin? What are five things you could do today to add value that would change your customers'
experiences?

Chunk-Down that Goal and Get Out of
Overwhelm
by Jack Canfield
Sometimes our biggest life goals seem so overwhelming.
We rarely see them as a series of small, achievable tasks, but in
reality, breaking down a large goal into smaller tasks--and accomplishing them one at a time--is
exactly how any big goal gets achieved.
After you have decided what you really want, with specific deadlines,
the next step is to determine all of the individual action steps you will need to take to
accomplish your goal.
How to Chunk It
Down
There are several ways to figure out the action steps you will need to
take to accomplish any goal. One is to consult with people who have already done what you want to
do and ask what steps they took. From their experience, they can give you all of the necessary
steps as well as advice on what pitfalls to avoid.
Another way is to purchase a book or manual that outlines the process.
Yet another way is to start from the end and look backward. You simply
close your eyes and imagine that it is now the future and you have already achieved your goal. Then
just look back and see what you had to do to get to where you now are. What was the last thing you
did? And then the thing before that, and then the thing before that, until you arrive at the first
action you had to start with.
Remember that it is okay
not to know how to do something.
It's okay to ask for guidance and advice from those who do know.
Sometimes you can get it free, and sometimes you have to pay for it. Get used to asking,
"Can you tell me how to go
about...?" and"What would I
have to do to...?" and "How did
you...?"
Keep researching and asking until you can create a realistic action plan
that will get you from where you are to where you want to go.
What will you need to do? How much money will you need to save or raise?
What new skills will you need to learn? What resources will you need to mobilize? Who will you need
to enroll in your vision? Who will you need to ask for assistance? What new disciplines or habits
will you need to build into your life?
Another valuable technique for creating an action plan for your goals is
called mind mapping.
How to Use Mind
Mapping
Mind mapping is a simple but powerful process for creating a detailed
to-do list for achieving your goal. It lets you determine what information you'll need to gather,
who you'll need to talk to, what small steps you'll need to take, how much money you'll need to
earn or raise, which deadlines you'll need to meet, and so on--for each and every goal.
When I began creating my first educational audio program--a breakthrough
goal that led to extraordinary gains for me and my business--I used mind mapping to help me "chunk
down" that very large goal into all the individual tasks I would need to complete to produce a
finished product.
To mind-map your own
goals, follow these steps as illustrated below:
1.) Center
circle: In the center circle, jot down the name of your
stated goal--in this case, Create an Audio Educational Program.
2.) Outside
circles: Next, divide the goal into the major categories
of tasks you'll need to accomplish to achieve the greater goal--in this case, Title, Studio,
Topics, Audience, and so on.
3.) Spokes:
Then, draw spokes radiating outward from each mini-circle and
label each one (such as Write Copy, Color Picture for Back Cover, and Arrange Lunch.)
On a separate line connected to the minicircle, write every single step
you'll need to take. Break down each one of the more detailed task spokes with action items to help
you create your master to-do list.
Next, Make a Daily To-Do
List
Once you've completed a mind map for your goal, convert all of the to-do
items into daily action items by listing each one on your daily to-do lists and committing to a
completion date for each one. Then schedule them in the appropriate order into your calendar and do
whatever it takes to stay on schedule.
Do First Things
First
The goal is to stay on schedule and complete the most important item
first. In his excellent book, Eat That
Frog! 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time, Brian Tracy
reveals not just how to conquer procrastination but also how to prioritize and complete all of your
action items.
In his unique system, Brian advises goal-setters to identify the one to
five things you must accomplish on any given day, and then pick the one you absolutely must do
first. This becomes your biggest and ugliest frog.
He then suggests you accomplish that task first--in essence, eat that
frog first--and, by so doing, make the rest of your day much, much easier. It's a great strategy.
But unfortunately, most of us leave the biggest and ugliest frog for last, hoping it will go away
or somehow become easier. It never does. However, when you accomplish your toughest task early in
the day, it sets the tone for the rest of your day.
By chunking down your
goals, and then taking daily action on them, you create momentum and build your confidence, both of
which move you farther and faster toward the achievement of your goals.
Now go take some action!
