Self-Discipline: Essential to Self-Confidence and Success

In today’s issue we have articles on how self-confidence is essential to your success and how self-discipline is as well. Equally important is that consistent self-discipline helps to build self-confidence.

Self-discipline is truly an essential attribute of successful people. Whether you are training for a marathon, mastering your business or seeking to achieve anything else in life self-discipline is necessary.

To rise to the stop in your field or endeavor you must master your subject area and you must stand out as the best in your field. It does not matter what field you are in. Success comes to those who master their work. Mastery comes from consistent work and practice. Consistent work and practice only happen when self-discipline is an integral part of your daily activity.

As Jim Rohn observes in today’s quote below, the price of self-discipline is very small compared to the awful cost of failure that comes from the lack of it.

On the road to self improvement we can all benefit greatly from learning this important truth and applying self-discipline in our lives.

Wishing you success and fulfillment,

Daniel R. Murphy

Seven Key Elements to Success through Self Confidence

One of the common attributes of successful people, and financially successful people in particular, is a high self confidence. This does not mean they are pompous or conceited. In fact many successful men and women are very humble. They recognize that while their own personal effort is essential to their success they also must depend on many other people to make their financial success happen.

Confidence is born of understanding what it takes to be successful and the willingness to commit to disciplines that lead to that success. Here are some common attributes found among the rich and financially successful:

1. They understand that there is no such thing as failure. They understand that each set back is a learning experience upon which they build to do it better next time. When they have no fear of failure their confidence grows.

2. Successful people understand that success is not a secret. It can be learned. Just as others have made and lost fortunes so can they. The key is to learn how it is done and to be willing to do what it takes to achieve it.

3. Successful people understand that while success may not be a secret it also many not be easy. They are willing to continually learn, experiment, and adjust to circumstances.

4. Financially successful people understand that financial success comes from an understanding of the market place – from understanding what the market values and learning how to supply it. They also understand that this changes all the time and they must study that market and adjust to meet it.

5. Successful people learn equally well from other’s mistakes and avoid those errors. This builds even more confidence.

6. Successful people understand that knowledge, hard work, persistence and self discipline will bring them success over time. They understand the need for patience. They do not expect miracles or get rich quick results.

7. Financially successful people understand they must continually focus on their business and their wealth. It will not take care of itself. They know that if they keep that focus they can succeed.

These are the primary attributes that we see in financially successful people. These attitudes build confidence. With each success more confidence is built. This understanding also limits or eliminates fear which allows them to take the risks that are essential to success.

Genuine self confidence is not blind or naïve. It comes from constant learning and experience. There are no shortcuts.

One way to learn how people build this level of self confidence is to study the lives of successful people. Your library is full of books on successful people. Read biographies of people like Michael Dell, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffet, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, Colonel Sanders and others who have achieved success. Learn from people in your community, business or field who have been successful.

Talk to others in your field who know how people have succeeded. Look for common elements in those stories. The more you learn about how others became successful and overcame failure and obstacles to their success the more confidence you build in yourself.

After all, if they did it, why can’t you?

Lincoln’s Wisdom by Daniel R. Murphy

Chapter 8 Lincoln on Self-Discipline

No one understood better than Abraham Lincoln the value of self-discipline. Few have applied it more consistently.

Lincoln had no formal education, having spent no more than a year or two at most in grammar school. His step mother taught him to read. Everything else that Lincoln came to know and learn he taught himself. This in itself is extraordinarily remarkable.

He mastered English grammar and prose. He memorized pages of both prose and poetry including many parts of the Bible. He mastered legal reasoning and learned enough law to practice regularly in state courts and federal courts. He learned Euclidian geometry while he practiced law. He used this knowledge to improve his powers of logic. He learned land surveying. He taught himself all of this.

Lincoln was an avid reader. He read several newspapers every day. He read many books although the number of books was not as significant as the depth. He would read a book over and over until he understood it in great detail. Most of the books he read were not easy to read. Blackstone’s Common Law for example is a difficult book to read and he read it many times.

In preparation for a major case or speech he would retreat to a library and read for hours. He took copious notes and wrote and rewrote many of his speeches and other writings.

In his years as a lawyer he not only continued to read various works but he exercised daily self-discipline to prepare thoroughly for his cases. His high level of preparation often placed him in a superior position in the courtroom and led to man victories.

When Lincoln studied he did so vigorously and for long periods of time. He mastered a subject.

Lincoln understood well that to accomplish anything of importance in life requires continuous self-discipline. As President he would spend hours studying military science and government documents. He spent many more hours reading and answering thousands of pieces of correspondence. He worked long hours, rising relatively early most mornings, being in the office no later than 8:00 AM, and often working late into the night. When he was not working he was often reading and studying.

Lincoln loved so socialize and to read popular comic literature. He used these times to unwind and sooth his worried soul. However he never neglected his work for enjoyment.

Abraham Lincoln’s accomplishments were tremendous. For a self taught man they are hard to even imagine. He did it through consistent self-discipline. We can all learn a great deal from this experience.

Lincoln lost many political battles and lost most of the political races he entered. He never gave up and continued to pursue his goals. His self-discipline led to his ultimate victory, both personally and for the nation.

As Lincoln said, “By all means, don’t say ‘if I can’; say ‘I will’”.

A Personal Review of the Book, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

By Siobhan Sims

When reading this book, I wasn't sure what to think of it. Firstly the author kept repeating himself and was almost rambling. However, as I started to read the First Agreement of the four, it seemed to actually flow into me. I know it sounds weird but it did.

Here is a breakdown of the book as I saw it and I hope it is of help to you!

The First Agreement: Make Your Word Impeccable - I understand this to mean that you should not gossip and should only say good things as what goes around, comes around. It also means that you should not talk yourself down by telling yourself that you are stupid or you did a bad job of something. It is by talking to yourself positively, that you will make yourself loved and be loved. It was only when I thought about this, along with the awareness that I picked up from the last book, that I realised how many times I put myself down in my own mind and how when I stop myself and only say positive things, that I feel good about myself and more confident.

The Second Agreement: Don't Take It Personally - I understood this to mean that everyone is in their own world and while you can't expect others to come and live by your world, you should also not allow yourself to be dragged into others. This was a funny thing to try to do as for 31 years of my life; I have been taking it personally. I am now breaking the habit as it is eating away at me. I actually had an experience of a person I knew saying something mean about me and while it hurt I have been using the not taking it personally rule to deal with it.

I'll get back to you on that one!

The Third Agreement: Don't Make Assumptions - Another favourite of mine. It was only when I really thought about this one that I realised how much I do it and how just as the author said, I have taken my assumptions to be truth even though I have absolutely no evidence to base them on other than my breaking agreement two by taking it personally. This was not as hard to break as I thought. Every time I start to assume I have been able to stop myself and let the feeling go. It has been good for me.

The Fourth Agreement: Always Do Your Best This - was particularly interesting for me, as I am known for pushing myself to breaking point because I always feel I am not doing enough. What struck me most was that doing your best meant not doing less than your best but also not doing more, as this will burn you out. This was something I did in jobs before and resulted in me unhappy and rundown. No more of that.

My favourite and never-heard-a-truer-saying quote from the book was:

All the sadness and drama you have lived in your life was rooted in making assumptions and taking things personally.

I hope you enjoyed this book review and keep an eye out for my others!
