One Solitary Life
I do not write on religious subjects here but no matter what your
religious beliefs may be or not be this story is noteworthy. It recalls for us how influential one man
has been despite how little he accomplished by common standards. Tomorrow many Christians celebrate
this one solitary life. There is no denying that this man’s life, though poor and simple, has
influenced the world like few others. As we consider our own contribution to this world it may be
useful to consider his. For those of you who celebrate his birth, Merry Christmas, and for all the rest
consider what you might learn from one very solitary life.
One Solitary Life
Here is a man who was born in an obscure village, the child of a
peasant woman. He grew up in another village. He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty. Then
for three years He was an itinerant preacher.
He never owned a home. He never wrote a book. He never held an office.
He never had a family. He never went to college. He never put His foot inside a big city. He never
traveled two hundred miles from the place He was born. He never did one of the things that usually
accompany greatness. He had no credentials but Himself...
While still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against
him. His friends ran away. One of them denied Him. He was turned over to His enemies. He went through
the mockery of a trial. He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves. While He was dying His
executioners gambled for the only piece of property He had on earth – His coat. When He was dead, He
was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend.
Nineteen long centuries have come and gone, and today He is a
centerpiece of the human race and leader of the column of progress.
I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever
marched, all the navies that were ever built; all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that
ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that
one solitary life.
This essay was adapted from a sermon by Dr James Allan Francis in “The
Real Jesus and Other Sermons” © 1926 by the Judson Press of Philadelphia (Note: when this was
written only 19 centuries had passed; today twenty have)
Wishing you success and
prosperity,

Classic Book Review
Title and Author: I Dare
You! by William H. Danforth
Synopsis of
Content:
In this mid 20th Century motivational classic the author, a
successful businessman and crusader for youth programs in St. Louis, Missouri, William Danforth
dares you and any other reader to do great things and to be great. Originally published in 1953 it
has been republished by several sources in recent years.
Although the book is aimed at youth and young adults challenging
them to become more than they might first believe possible it has motivational value for all ages.
Danforth was a strong believer that we limit ourselves and that by seizing opportunity and
believing in our virtually unlimited potential we could exceed all expectations, including our own,
and dare to be great.
In addition to providing raw motivational material the book
discusses seven primary areas, called “dares” where the author challenges the reader to go deeper
and strive further in life. They include adventure, accomplishments, strength, creativity, magnetic
personality, character, and the willingness to share what you have. These qualities will be
recognized as common to most success books and materials published over the past two centuries.
What distinguishes Danforth’s little book is his framing his challenge as a
dare.
While the attributes which Danforth promotes are found in works by
Marsden, Hill and others the daring approach used by this author is unique. It appealed to the
young and youthful, whether it be the high school aged children who attended his summer camps or
the young men entering the business world.
Readability/Writing
Quality:
The Executive Books edition is only 144 pages. It is easy to read,
having been aimed at young people. It may appear somewhat naïve and simplistic by today’s
standards. However the motivational truths in this work are no less true today than they were over
60 years ago.
Notes on
Author:
William Danforth was the founder and long time President of the
Ralston Purina Company. He also served as President of the American Youth Foundation and was very
active in the YMCA. During his summers he devoted his time to training and helping less fortunate
young people at summer camps in Michigan and elsewhere. He died in 1956.
Three Great Ideas You Can
Use:
1. “Wealth, notoriety, place, and power are no measure of success
whatever. The only true measure of success is the ration between what we might have done and what
we might have been on the one hand, and the thing we have made and the thing we have mad of
ourselves on the other”.
2. Each of us has four hidden giants or resources which we must
develop constantly to attain greatness. These include the physical, the mental, the social and the
spiritual aspects. To attain a balanced and powerful life you must nourish each of these aspects
fully.
3. Continuous learning and improvement are essential to
achievement. The author recommends a program of reading not less than one book per month. It will
pay you back many times.

Who Dares Wins: The Green Beret Way to Conquer Fear and
Succeed by Bob Mayer
By Alain Burrese
"Who Dares Wins: The Green Beret Way to Conquer
Fear and Succeed" by New York Times Bestselling Author Bob Mayer is a great book that teaches
former Green Beret officer Bob Mayer's strategies for conquering fear and achieving personal and
professional success. Having served with the 82nd Airborne Division and as a sniper with the 2nd
Infantry Division, I had opportunities to work with Special Forces a few times, and the military
concepts in this book appeal to me more than some of the other "success" related titles available.
Mayer does a very good job of showing how the concepts and strategies used by the military elite
can be used for personal or organizational success outside of the armed
forces.
The book is divided into three parts. The first
part is titled Area One: Wins. The chapters in this part teach three tools. First you must know the
What. What do you want to change or achieve? The next tool focuses on knowing Why you want to
change and to achieve your goals. The third tool is knowing Where will change
occur.
Part two, or Area Two, is Who. The tools in this
section are about understanding your character, knowing what change is and how to do it, and
building the courage to change. Area Three: Dares contains the tools for communicating your change
to the world, taking command of your change, and completing the circle of success and
change.
The nine tools are what Mayer uses to create his
Circle of Success. It is a good model to teach some very important concepts that will enable anyone
to achieve more if they actually implement the strategies and tools into their own lives and
businesses.
All three sections or parts have a conclusion that
focuses on doing things the Green Beret Way. These summaries and experiences help relate the
lessons to the real world. The book is full of quotes, stories, and lessons that will assist you
with making things happen and succeeding. The book covers concepts such as defining goals, staying
motivated, building mental toughness, daring to succeed, finding courage, taking risks,
communicating effectively, becoming a leader, and more. There are many exercises throughout the
text that if you actually take the time to do, you will undoubtedly move toward greater achievement
and success in your life.
Being former military and a martial artist, I lean
toward strategies that are warrior focused, and these concepts are included in my own teachings. So
I especially liked Mayer's "Who Dares Wins." Also being an author, I enjoyed when Mayer shared how
these principles have helped him in that arena too.
This isn't a book I'm going to put back on the shelf
and forget about. I'm going to keep it out, re-read parts, and continue to work on some of the
exercises outlines in the pages of the text. I'm going to use this book to continue on my journey,
as well as help me teach others using warrior themes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who
wants to learn more about success using strategies from the elite U. S. Military's Special Forces,
or Green Berets.

Gratitude and Appreciation as a Secret for
Success by Jack Canfield
The best attitude you can possibly aspire to express year-round is
one of gratitude and appreciation.
Being truly grateful for what is already present in your life will
automatically and effortlessly attract more good into your life.
Make a conscious decision to appreciate and acknowledge all that
you have already been blessed with. These emotions are of the highest vibrational frequency, and
through the Law of Attraction they will attract even more to be thankful for.
Try to be grateful for even the difficult and challenging
situations that arise in your life.
It is often through these situations, that we experience the most
profound spiritual and emotional growth. You can learn to view each apparent obstacle as an
opportunity to develop a new quality, strength, skill, insight or wisdom and be grateful for the
lessons. Each challenge is an opportunity for growth and expansion.
Rise to these occasions, and appreciate all that you are learning
in the process. Keeping your attitude positive and appreciative through these times will not only
help to avoid attracting more of these difficult situations into your life - it will also create a
field of positive energy that will attract more of what you do want.
"Of all the attitudes we can acquire, surely
the attitude of gratitude is the most
important,
and by far the most life-changing."
- Zig Ziglar
A Token of Gratitude
Try carrying a small token, stone, crystal, or some other
meaningful object with you each day in your pocket. Throughout the day, each time you reach into
your pocket for your money or keys it will serve as a tangible reminder to stop and think of
something you have to be grateful for. This is a great way to increase your awareness of all that
you have to be appreciative of.
Take a moment to breathe, and really feel the emotion of
gratitude. This simple mindfulness technique helps to raise your vibrational frequency and keep you
in a state of constant gratitude.
Your Gratitude Journal
Start keeping a daily Gratitude and Acknowledgement journal. This
is a necessary and valuable tool in the development of your growth and awareness. This book is not
intended to be a long, drawn out “diary” sort of thing, just a short, simple list of things you are
grateful for on that particular day. This is a place to honor and appreciate the good in your
life.
Gratitude:
Each evening, before going to bed, take a few minutes to review
your day. Think about the day’s events. Become aware of how many good things actually happened on
that day, and remember to appreciate even the challenges that you encountered. Select the five
things, or people, or events that you are most grateful for. There is no right or wrong here, just
whatever, or whoever you are sincerely grateful for on that particular day. It may be the warm sun
on your face, a cool breeze, a kind word, a friend, or just feeling good about what you got
accomplished that day. It may be the way you handled a particular situation that would have thrown
you into a tailspin in the past.
Anything you are grateful for. As you write them in your journal,
feel the gratitude and appreciation. Give thanks.
Acknowledgement:
Take a moment to acknowledge the changes that are occurring for
you personally. Write them down. Acknowledge just how well the Law of Attraction is working in your
life. Write down any specific event where the Law of Attraction was at work- the parking space you
envisioned, the meeting you wanted to schedule, the bonus check you received, the grade you wanted,
the person who said yes when you asked them out.
Miracles can and do occur on a daily basis. They are happening all
around you. Honor them, and notice them. Through acknowledgement, you will become more and more
aware of the amazing synchronicity that is already at work in your life.
Make the time you spend in contemplation and writing in your
Gratitude and Acknowledgement journal a sacred part of your daily routine.
Your continued expressions of joy and gratitude will draw even
greater joy, love and abundance into your life.
You will begin to notice a change in your perception of each day‘s
events. You will become more aware of the positive things that happen all around you every single
day. Your focus will shift, your energy will shift, and you will begin to appreciate how blessed
you already are. And … the Law of Attraction will respond to the higher vibration you are
creating.
Enjoy the journey.
Live each day in joy and gratitude.
