Is debt a problem for you?

The creation of wealth includes the proper use of debt. Today's issue contains an article on debt management and a number of links to our recent blog entries on debt management and mortgages. You need to know about mortgages and how to properly use debt to create wealth. Today we touch on the basics - in future issues we will look at debt in more detail.

I also review Julie Morgenstern's book on organization which is an important aspect of managing what you have and avoiding unnecessary expenditures. For many of us organization is a challenge as we accumulate more stuff.

Wishing you success and prosperity,

Daniel R. Murphy

When Organizing Isn't Enough - Shed Your Stuff, Change Your Life

by Julie Morgenstern

Synopsis of Content:

Bringing the art and science of organization to a new level Morgenstern's book introduces her SHED system. SHED stands for "separate" your treasures, "heave" your trash, "embrace" yourself, and "drive into the future."

As radical as it may sound this book advocates eliminating most of the "stuff" which complicates your life. She suggests that you keep only 10% - 20% of the things that clutter your thinking and your life.

First she shows you how to go through all your things and eliminate what is not serving you well. Then she shows how to get rid of the things, the habits and the other refuse in your life to identify your true self. This then permits you to fill your life only with those things which will truly fulfill your life and your genuine goals. Part of this also is trimming your schedule to eliminate those activities that do not serve you well and concentrating your efforts and your time on what is important.

Readability/Writing Quality:

The book is well written and reasonably easy to follow.

Notes on Author:

Julie Morgenstern is a speaker and consultant who teaches others how to get organized.

Three Great Ideas You Can Use:

1. To begin the effort at getting organized you must take a complete inventory of your life including your possessions, your time, how you spend it and your habits.

2. You must then evaluate how all these things and activities help you achieve what is important to you or hinder those efforts.

3. You must then take action - with some ruthlessness you must then eliminate the clutter, which for most people is a great deal of what they hold onto, and focus on the small part left which is truly important.

Lincoln's Wisdom by Daniel R. Murphy

Chapter: 6 - Tenacity

Abraham Lincoln accomplished so very much having started out with so little in no small part due to his incredible tenacity. He would read a book dozens, even hundreds of times until he thought he fully understood it. Many others would have given up after the first few readings but Lincoln learned early in life the value of tenacity.

Lincoln was repeatedly faced with defeat. He was a failure at several business ventures. He lost a number of elections and felt defeated politically more than once. Yet he never gave up. He continued to pursue career ideas until he found the one that worked for him so very well - the law. In politics, despite occasional retreats, he never actually gave up his pursuit of higher office including the White House.

While President he was assailed by many, even of his own party, for his national policies and the way he was running the Civil War. Abolitionists criticized him for not freeing the slaves, and their opponents vilified him for being willing to do so.

Despite his perceived inadequacies and the storm of criticism he faced on a daily basis, he never gave up. Despite the grief he and his family endured over the loss of one of his children while in the White House he never gave up. He continued to pursue what he believed to be right.

Perhaps nothing epitomizes Lincoln's belief in tenacity as much as his own written words to a West Point cadet who was deeply discouraged. Lincoln wrote: "Adhere to your purpose and you will soon feel as well as you ever did. On the contrary, if you falter, and give up, you will lose the power of keeping any resolution, and will regret it all your life ... Stick to your purpose."

His words are no less true today. Do not give up. Practice tenacity and see the reward.

Be Inspired II by Roger Thomas Lincoln

He went bankrupt - losing $800,000 in one market trade including half a million of his own money and $300,000 of relative's money. The loss hit him very hard and he stopped trading for two full years.

In the third and fourth years he resumed trading but only broke even. He kept studying methods and the market and in the process discovered a new trading signal called the cumulative tick indicator. This led him to consistent earnings, often in the triple digits. In time he became one of the top traders in the industry. Mark Cook had not given up, he kept on trying and kept on improving his methods.

He now tells people there is no simple or easy way to succeed in the market. He says it takes three to five years of 12 hour days and lots of losses to find success in the market. Most people do not want to hear about that much work and give up. Cook did not give up and found the reward in hard work and persistence.

(Note: this true story is presented as an example of the possible results of persistence and hard work even in the stock market - it is not intended to be an endorsement of a particular trading method or even of trading itself. All stock market trading is risky.)
