Successful
people read - Reading leads to Success!
|
|
Do
not let fear conquer you!
Yes, we are in a recession. Yes, people have lost jobs
and homes. Yes, banks have failed. Yes, some have lost a large part of their stock portfolios.
You can choose to bury your head in the sand. You can be driven by fear and uncertainty, no
longer take any risks, invest all your money in bank accounts that do not even keep up with
inflation, and miss out on all that you could achieve.
Or you can recognize, as David Bach asks us in his
latest book, Start Over, Finish
Rich, that success is never guaranteed but will not come unless you rededicate
yourself, take some risks and build a sound financial plan for yourself. This takes some study
and awareness. It takes planning and thought. It takes consistent discipline and effort - but it
can be done. In fact this can be a time of tremendous opportunity to build a business or an
investment and reap the rewards that the next economic upturn will bring.
Do not let fear conquer you. Study the options and make
a plan. Adjust as necessary. Discipline yourself to save and to build. In the end you will have
accomplished so much more. There is no safe haven. If you abandon that myth, conquer your own
fear and move forward success can be yours.
And if you want some inspiration and great tips on how
to do it, read today's review of the book and get it. Read it. And most importantly, do
it!
Wishing you success and prosperity,
Daniel

Title
and Author:
Start Over, Finish
Rich by David Bach
Synopsis
of Content:
This is Bach's follow up to Smart Couples
Finish Rich and a number of variations on that theme published over the past
decade. I must admit when I first picked this book up I was skeptical. A quick scan of the table
of contents revealed much the same topic areas covered in Bach's earlier books. It looked like
so much repackaging.
Reading deeper however revealed that this book really
does offer something different than the past editions. If you have not read the past editions
that may not matter to you. If you have read any of his past material you will find this
material familiar but different enough to justify your time.
Bach uses the same basic principles here that he has
used in all his books. However he adds relevant information to address the fear and sense of
helplessness that many have felt since the economic downturn late in the past decade and offers
a few new ideas to help people respond. This book provides a roadmap for someone who has never
used his methods in the past as well as those who may have been doing the right things and yet
got hit by the downturn.
You can sum up Bach's method fairly simply: clearly
understand your finances and manage them consistently and carefully; eliminate credit card debt;
create an automatic savings system; eliminate unnecessary expenses (his Latte Factor) to free up
money for saving and investing and then save and invest with an eye on the long term rather than
worrying about shorter term market fluctuations. Bach is a market optimist and essentially tells
us that the worst is over, following every black cloud is a rainbow and you can invest now at
bargain prices.
This book is worth the read unless you are independently
wealthy and managing your funds without any concerns or losses. It is a good check list of the
basic things we all should be doing to marry the correct level of sensible frugality with sound
investing. It is also a shot of hope and optimism in what has been a bleak financial
environment. Bach then finishes with a personal "start over" story that inspires and instructs,
but I wont ruin that for you - you need to read the book.
Readability/Writing
Quality:
This book is very readable. He uses lots of
illustrations and stories and breaks blocks of text up with sub headings and text boxes.
Notes
on Author:
David Bach is a prolific
author with over 7 million book sales among his eleven books starting with the Automatic
Millionaire. He is now often on television and makes many public appearances. He is a renowned
seminar speaker and financial author.

How
to Turn Limp Affirmations Into Mantras for Success!
By Jack Canfield
To affirm
something is simply to declare that it is true. So, creating and using affirmations should be a
breeze, right?
Actually, the true art of the
affirmation is both subtle and profound. Despite the popularity of this technique, some people
use affirmations that are bland and perhaps even self-defeating.
When creating your affirmation,
remember that even minor variations in wording can make a huge difference in the results you
get. Since your words literally have the power to create your circumstances, invest a few
minutes now to take your affirmation skills to a higher level.
Consider
the following statement:
I
will quit smoking with ease and joy, remembering the effects on my physical and mental health
and preparing to live a longer life.
By using the guidelines found
below, you can transform limp affirmations like that into mantras for manifesting a huge change
in your life!
The following points are key:
FIVE
GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW
1)
Enter the "now"
Start your affirmation by entering the present tense. Take the condition you
desire and declare it to be already true.
2) Be
positive
Our sample affirmation keeps the focus on smoking--the condition that you do
not want.
Instead, shine a light on what you do
want--to be smoke-free.
A related reminder: Our
subconscious mind skips the word not.
So, delete this word from your affirmations. "I am not afraid of public speaking" gives us the
message that you are afraid. Use, "I feel at ease as I speak in public."
3) Be
concise
Shorter is better. Affirmations with fewer words are often easier to recall,
especially in situations when you feel some stress. Rhyming makes your affirmations even more
memorable. For example, "I am feeling alive at 185."
4)
Include action
Whenever possible, affirm yourself as a person who takes action. For example: "I
am gratefully driving my new Porsche along an open highway." Action engages the Law of Attraction,
creating new results in our lives and opening us to further inspiration.
5.)
Include a feeling word Powerful
affirmations include content and emotion. Content describes the specific outcome
that you desire. Emotion gets to the heart of how you feel
about that outcome. For a more potent affirmation, add both elements.
Consider this affirmation:
"I am
supporting my children tofully come forward
into the world."
The content of this statement is
clear. Yet it lacks an emotional charge. Breathe life into this affirmation by adding an active
expression of feeling:
"I am
lovingly supporting my
children and encourage them to fully express their
unique talents and gifts."
You will know that you have a
powerful affirmation when you feel a surge of emotional energy. The force of feeling jumpstarts
you into action.
AN
AFFIRMATION MAKEOVER
Now get some direct experience
with "affirmation transformation." Return to the first example mentioned in this article:
"I
will quit smoking with easeand joy,
remembering the effects on my
physical and mental health and
preparing to live a longer
life."
Playing with the guidelines
listed serves up some more exciting options, such as:
"I am
breathing effortlessly with lungs that are pure and clean."
"I am
celebrating how easily I breathethrough strong,
healthy lungs."
Also consider the
following affirmations on a variety of topics:
"I am
joyfully celebrating my
graduation from college with a master's
degree."
"I am
effectively delivering my firsttalk to an audience
of over 1,000 people who affirm
my message with a standing
ovation."
"I
amconfidently
checking the balanceof my bank account as I make a deposit of
$1,000,000."
"I am
walking up on stage to
receive my first Emmy award and receiving a roar of
applause."
When you're satisfied with the
wording of your affirmation, start using it right away.
Repeat your affirmations at
least three times daily--first thing in the morning, midday, and just before you go to sleep.
Regular repetition will gently return your focus to manifesting the life of your dreams.

Surviving
Information Overload by Kevin A Miller
Review by Alain Burrese
"Surviving Information Overload" by Kevin A. Miller has
a subtitle of, "The Clear, Practical guide to help you stay on top of what you need to know." I
found the book full of practical advice to do just that. I also agree with the statement on the
back, "You don't need to read all of it - just what you need when you need it." However, you may
want to read it all the way through quickly like I did, and then refer back to sections that
might help you with certain areas in your own life and situations.
One might note that on the back of the book for
classification purposes, it is listed as: Christian Living/Practical Life/Business &
Leadership. I bring this up because there is a bit of Miller's Christian beliefs in the book.
Some people will like this, others may not. Most of the book focuses on practical information
overload issues with a little Christian faith here and there. However, the final chapter short
chapter is specifically aimed at church leaders and the book ends with a short prayer by Richard
Kriegbaum from "Leadership Prayers." For some, this will make the book better, for others, they
might not like it. Some won't care and will read the book for the information overload advice,
which is what the book is mostly about.
Again, the author suggests reading the parts of the book
that you need to read and that will help you. To assist in this, at the beginning of each
chapter he tells who the chapter is most meant for. For example, at the beginning of the chapter
"How To Find What You Need Online" it states, "Read this chapter if you search the web two or
more times per week and if you get many results that aren't what you're looking for." These
suggestions will help the busy reader choose which sections of the book to read for the most
benefit.
There are four parts to the book, with each part having
several chapters. Part One is Finding The Information You Need. The chapters include: What we're
up against, selecting your key information areas, the fine art of capturing good ideas, and how
to turn information into results.
Part Two is Clearing Information Clutter. The chapters
include: Your information audit, how to handle e-mail, how to find what you need online, how to
handle voice mail, junk mail, and magazines, and how to organize, file, and store information.
Part Three is Creating Space To Think, and included chapters on: Tap the power of block days,
try an info-techno Sabbath, why we secretly like overload, and blessed are they who admit their
ignorance.
Part Four is titled Bonus Stuff and includes the chapter
Great Information on Information which lists various references that may help you with specific
areas, and the final chapter I mentioned above: A Word for Church Leaders.
Overall, I found some useful tips regarding information
in this book. It's worth a quick read if you are having trouble with some of the topics he
covers. I, like almost everyone these days, seem to get bogged down with the amount of
information flooding at me at high speed and volume. I plan on trying a few of Miller's ideas to
help me do as he says, Survive Information Overload.

Be Inspired II
by Roger Thomas Lincoln
His father abandoned his family. He grew up in poverty
and dropped out of high school his senior year to join the Navy. Accused of cheating on an
entrance exam (he did not) he was shipped out to sea. On board ship he was bullied and
humiliated. He was told he was stupid.
After nine months at sea he returned to port and took an
aptitude test. He scored off the charts. He was advised to take night classes at Tulane
University. Eight years later he had a bachelor's degree, a master's degree in physics and a
Ph.D. in computer science.
Despite the success he had further setbacks. In 1978 he
was fired from the New York Institute of Technology for insubordination. His wife left him. He
fell into a deep depression. Six months of counseling did not help. He finally realized he was
not going where he wanted to go. He gave himself permission to succeed.
He went to Stanford with a changed attitude. He invented
a new computer chip that changed the world of computer graphics. He revolutionized the art and
science of auto and aircraft design, virtual reality games and Hollywood animation. He founded
his own company, Silicon Graphics Inc. Sadly he eventually lost control of the company to the
venture capitalists who funded it. He took it very personally but turned his rage into a new
company which made him over $2 billion.
He partnered with Marc Andreeson, the University of
Illinois computer guru who had written the Mosaic program, the original internet browser. He
convinced Andreeson that a better browser was the goal they should work toward. They founded a
new company called Netscape. The high school dropout and naval grunt became a leader in the
internet revolution and became one of the Forbes
400 richest Americans.
Glenn Mueller, a major shareholder in Silicon Graphics,
called him repeatedly offering to invest in the new Netscape, convinced that he had something
really big. Despite the calls he turned Mueller down each time and on April 4, 1994, the day
Netscape went public, the share price went from $12 a share to $48 and later $140!. Sadly
Mueller killed himself with a shot to the head. However the high school dropout,
Jim
Clark, went on to even more success with Netscape, became an author and made
movies.
Jim Clark had faced ridicule and failure repeatedly. He
"failed" time and again. He did not give up. He demonstrated what the human spirit can
accomplish.
